Working on my new still life project I decided to visit an exhibition of Ikebana at the National Arboretum in Washington DC. A wonderful curator of the show and the artist Sonia Misawa taught me a lot about the Japanese art of floral arrangement.
Different styles like rikka, shoka and free style require a taste for elegance and simplicity, patience and a peaceful heart in order to create a composition that is both still and dynamic at the same time.
Looking at these beautiful Ikebana one can guess what might have served as an inspiration for contemporary Japanese fashion designers like Kenzo and Yohji Yamamoto.
